Your not and communist for wanting your government to honor is promise. You’re not a communist for wanting hard work and dedication to be rewarded. And you’re not a communist for expecting more out of your representatives. The government expects people to live the American dream, but will take away every tool at our disposal to achieve it. That’s like asking someone to build a fence, but they take away the wood, nails and posts, and then turn around and blame you for why you failed. This unfortunately, seems to be the point, because GOD Forbid if people who are just getting by, finally got ahead, which in my view is what the American dream is all about.
Very good observation. It has felt (for a long time now) like more is being asked of us all the time with less provided for our efforts while we are assured if we were willing to try hard enough, things would be better. Statistics show in all kinds of measures that we work more than many other countries but get so much less for it.
I mostly said if because when I began arguing for universal healthcare (that was back in 1984, and I have believed in it ever since), libertarians and others have insisted taxing people progressively is theft rather than those who benefit most paying more and that I wanted to use government coercion for theft.
I find the argument frustrating because it seems like there is a group within society that cannot be satisfied with the acquisition of money and I just don’t get it.
The most money I ever earned in my entire life was in 2002, when I made almost $40,000. I have never made that much in one year, ever since, and my current annual income is less than half of that this year.
Being on social security feels so precarious. Hand to mouth hardly begins to describe how thin my tightrope is, and political and religious rhetoric I have absorbed over the years assure me I am a waste of taxpayer dollars. 😕
I agree with your sentiment and believe that both political parties don’t care to see, are blind to it, or make incremental progress to remedy it. That’s not to say that all politicians are oblivious or indifferent to those who are struggling. It’s just that the ones that truly want to improve the lives of those, who feel that the government has abandoned them, few and far between. It’s my hope that, during the time between midterms and the general election, that more individuals will see the discrepancy of wealth between the wealthy and the middle class and poor, which will become painfully apparent once the “Big, Disgraceful, Bill kicks in. I know people want and can get behind universal healthcare, making the wealthy pay their fair share and livable wages, it’s just getting people to vote for politicians, who ‘ll deliver on those promises once in office, is where their trepidation comes from. Because as history has shown, these promises tend to be broken by both parties and I believe that stems from the fact that not enough hard-working people, who can relate to those who struggle on a personal level run. If more everyday people ran, won and became the majority in both chambers, as well as a president, who was truly invested in the plight of the average American, then and only then, could American promise that was made so long ago can be keep.
And - it is about supporting the lawmakers working to create those policies once they are in office. I realized recently that a lot of us are so burned out and so EXPECTING to be betrayed that we show up for elections and go home. There isn’t as much time pushing policy at our lawmakers compared to paid lobbyists. One of my goals/hopes is to create a network of voters who can be believed to be organized, etc. that when one of the group shows up in a legislator’s office and says, “if you don’t support this program or if you pass this bad law, we will not be reelecting you” and they will recognize that it is an honest and serious threat.
It will take organization and networking, but if enough of us can get together and work together like that, we can be “louder” than the wealthy can ever be.
That’s why I became a paid subscriber, I believe that your a voice for a community of people, that to often is overlooked and overshadowed and if I can help you build your coalition, to effect policy that helps create more positive change for those who have lost faith in government and politicians. So Lisa, continue to advocate for those, who don’t feel like their concerns are being validated by their local or state representatives. Your approach to influence policy change is commendable and is often overlooked.
Lisa J, you are a smart woman dealing with a lot of harsh realities. You can get the Steps app on your phone! I use it. And I see your true reality - you are smart & intuitive and KIND! I love hearing your story. I have some harsh realities too. BUT I’m still hanging in there. I’m in Denver, the Mile High City. Democratic state. Sanctuary City! Yay! And why not move back to Penn? 🥰💖🐈⬛
